Abstract:

Onion is an important vegetable and has been cultivated in almost all parts of India for thousands of years. Onion is considered a highly export-oriented crop and brings valuable foreign currency to the country. Onions occupy an important place in the diets of all income groups, and price changes have had far-reaching implications for their dominance as an ingredient in many Indian recipes. It is important. Changes in onion acreage and production lead to price changes that are causing concern among farmers and consumers. This study was conducted to analyze the growth rate of onion area, production, and productivity of onions in Tamil Nadu from 1971 to 2020. The data can be divided into pre-liberalization (1971-1990), post-liberalization (1991-2020), and the entire period (1971-2020). As for the Tamil Nadu overall onion scenario, it shows positive growth in area and production throughout the period. Productivity showed negative growth throughout the entire period before and after liberalization. Since the growth rate per area of onion before liberalization was high and onion productivity affects production, it was concluded that technological development is necessary to increase onion productivity.
